Ewww! Hurricane Sandy Set To Bring Out The Rats

As the flood waters caused by Hurricane Sandy put New York City under siege, rats may be scurrying to the streets in order to escape the flooding.

STORY: A Major Disaster! Hurricane Sandy Leaves NYC Flooded, Wet And Dark

According to Rick Ostfeld of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Milbrook, New York, rising water will force rats out of their underground lairs and into contact with humans.

Ostifeld told the Huffington Post, that they would escape the floods and head for safer ground, such as apartments and other buildings inhabited by humans, saying-

“Rats are incredibly good swimmers and they can climb. Rats are highly social individuals and live in a fairly stable social structure. If this storm disturbs that, rats could start infesting areas they never did before.”

According to Ostfeld, this could result in a rise in infectious diseases carried by urban rats, including leptospirosis, hantavirus, typhus, salmonella, and even the plague.

That is so gross! Hopefully Ostfeld’s wrong in his assessment but, then again, he is an expert.

WHAT?! Jonesboro Police Officer Cleared In Chavis Carter Shooting

KAIT-Jonesboro, AR-News, weather, sports, classifieds

Jonesboro Police Officer Keith Baggett is back at work today after being cleared of any wrongdoing in the shooting death of 21-year-old Chavis Carter.

STORY: Jonesboro Police Release Cell Phone Footage Of Chavis Carter

Baggett is now back on patrol with the Jonesboro, Arkansas Police Department.

Officer Baggett was not the officer who missed the gun during Carter's initial pat-down when the 21-year-old was pulled over on July 28th in a car with two other people. There is still another officer involved in the case as of now.

The bizarre shooting as to how a handcuffed man sitting in the back of a patrol car can shoot himself in the head has many in Jonesboro asking questions and has left Chavis' family reeling.

An autopsy report conducted by the Jonesboro Medical Examiners office revealed that Chavis did shoot himself in the head - even though they didn’t take any gunshot residue from his hands.

Although Baggett has been cleared, there is still outrage and suspicion revolving around Chavis' case, as the Justice Department joins the investigation into his death.

Violent, sophisticated gang dismantled with arrests

One of the most violent, sophisticated gangs in Central Florida — responsible for hundreds of crimes including homicides, drug trafficking and identity theft — was dismantled Wednesday with the arrests of nearly two dozen members.

Local, state and federal authorities built a racketeering case against 33 members of the Bloods and local sets of the street gang, including the Mohawk Boys, the Bullet Boys, the Fly Goons Lumberjacks and the Marlin Boys.

Law-enforcement became aware of the violent gangs in 2006, and since then, have linked members to a range of crimes including the recent shooting of 15-year-old Danielle Sampson, who was struck in the head by a stray bullet while riding in her family's minivan.

Authorities said the suspected shooter, gang member Tyrone Mosby, was fleeing a burglary at a drug house at the time.

"There's no question that our community will be safer," Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said of the arrests.

The investigation, which involves the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the FBI, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and multiple sheriff's and police departments, is ongoing. Twelve members remain wanted by authorities.

Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation Director Larry Zwieg said there is no end to the type of crimes the gang members committed through the years.

"The crimes were all over the map," he said.

That includes traditional drug sales, such as cocaine, but the group also expanded into the prescription-drug trafficking market.

The center of the investigation, dubbed "Operation Strong Arm," is Jabarus Nathan, identified by MBI as the leader of the organization.

Nathan, a local rap artist who records under the "Fly Boy Moses Law Entertainment" label, has an extensive criminal history including dozens of felony arrests.

Other high-ranking members of the gang who were charged include: Justin Dickson, Santana Sutton Sr., Lincoln Granston, Colin Wilson, Santana Sutton Jr., and Travis Jackson.

More than a dozen firearms and cocaine were seized in the case.
